Hello everyone,

Judo Alberta plans to a take team to the 2024 Junior US Open in Fort Lauderdale.

Minimum Eligibility: U16/U18/U21/SR Provincial Team Member

Judo Alberta HP Coach Committee will consider other Judo Alberta judoka who do not meet the above minimum criteria on a case-by-case request.

Main Competition Hotel: Embassy Suites Fort Lauderdale – free breakfast and evening refreshment/snacks included (12-15 min walk to the competition site)

Junior US Open & 1 Day Camp:

Departure Wednesday, July 24, 2024 / Return Tuesday, July 30, 2024

Approx. Hard Cost: $1,500 to $1,800.00; Flight / Hotel / Ground Transport / Travel insurance (TBF)

Competition Entry Fee & Camp Fees will vary based on the number of divisions athletes are competing in. ($110.00USD Per Division / Camp $70.00USD) Paid by athletes. (TBF)

Nage no Kata for Grading Clinic

Time: Sunday April 28 2024 12:00 -4 pm (after Interprovincial Training Camp)
Location: Tolide Judo Kwai Dow Centennial Centre, 84 St. & 87 Ave. Fort Saskatchewan

Getting ready for grading? Judo Alberta is hosting a free clinic on Nage no Kata after the April Interprovincial Training camp, at the same dojo! While our focus will be on helping candidates to prepare their kata for upcoming gradings, this clinic will be beneficial for competitors, sensei who teach kata at their dojo, and those who want to improve their Nage no Kata.

NCCP Dojo Assistant/Dojo Instructor Courses

Judo Alberta will be holding NCCP Dojo Assistant and Dojo Instructor courses on April 19-21, 2024 in Calgary.  Register online in the Locker at coach.ca using your NCCP credentials.  Don’t have an NCCP number yet?  Simply go to the coach.ca website, click the red icon at the top right (The Locker) and then at the login screen press the “Don’t have an NCCP#? Create one now!” link to get started. Once you have logged into the Locker, look for the calendar at the top of the page and find the judo courses on this date.

DOJO ASSISTANT 

This Learning Experience prepares the participant to assist in the delivery of judo practices for judo players of all stages of development, with an emphasis on participants under 13 years old. It is recommended that the assistant work under the supervision of a certified Dojo Instructor. Assistants under the age of majority must work under the direct supervision of a certified Dojo Instructor.

Prerequisites:  

  • Minimum age of 16.
  • Minimum rank of green belt with a working knowledge of the judo techniques included in the DA program as identified by the Judo Canada kyu syllabus.
  • Sterling background check for all candidate coaches who are 18 years old and older via Sterling Agency – for details see: https://pages.sterlingbackcheck.ca/landing-pages/j/judo-canada/
  • OR equivalent if such checks are required by the Province/Territory. In cases where the Sterling agency is not used for this service, results of the background check must be communicated to Judo Canada to NCCP@judocanada.org by the individual coaches or P/T offices.
  • Successful online completion of the “Respect in Sport for the activity leader” e-learning module available at https://judo-canada-al.respectgroupinc.com/.

Note 1: The background check and Respect in Sport modules may be completed after the course.  

DOJO INSTRUCTOR

The “Instructor” course provides the participant with knowledge to instruct technical, physical, and mental, social and other aspects of judo. The course prepares the participant to be a club instructor responsible for providing judokas with the basic physical literacy skills with emphasis on children under the age of 14, judo skills as described in the Judo Canada syllabus, and to introduce young judokas to competition. 

Prerequisites:  

  • Minimum age of 18.  
  • Minimum rank of brown belt with a working knowledge of the judo techniques included in the Judo Canada kyu syllabus. 
  • Trained DA or Trained Community Coach. 
  • Sterling background check for all candidate coaches who are 18 years old and older via Sterling Agency – for details see: https://www.sterlingtalentsolutions.ca/landing-pages/j/judo-canada/
  •  OR equivalent if such checks are required by the Province/Territory. In cases where the Sterling agency is not used for this service, results of the background check must be communicated to Judo Canada to NCCP@judocanada.org by the individual coaches or P/T offices. The Backcheck is required only if the check done for the DA was done more than 3 years earlier.  
  • Successful online completion of a “Respect in Sport for the activity leader” e-learning module available at https://judo-canada-al.respectgroupinc.com/ for all candidates who did not complete this module in the past.

2024 June Yudansha Grading

  1. All candidates for Competitive and Technical stream must enter their application into the on-line system https://judocanada.org/grading/ no LATER than April 23, 2024.
  2. Refer to the Judo Alberta website https://judoalberta.com/index.php/grading-kata/ for information about black belt grading and the National Grading Syllabus.
  3. Candidates should obtain their head instructor’s approval before making the application. Both have a responsibility to ensure the information entered is accurate and verified.
  4. Shodan candidates have the responsibility of ensuring their ikkyu (brown belt) registration date agrees with the Judo Alberta registrar’s records (as evidenced by the Judo Alberta Certificate of Promotion). Contact the Judo Alberta Registrar if any questions.
  5. All candidates must have a Judo Canada passport and bring it to the grading. If you need to order a passport, then go to https://judocanada.org/judo-canada-passport/
  6. Tournament Point Certification forms (signed by the Tournament Director) will no longer be used for verifying tournament wins. However, official draw sheets from the tournament or certification by the head sensei must be emailed to the Provincial Grading Committee at gyokamura@gmail.com once the application has been made. Registration for the 2024 Alberta Provincial Judo Championships is now OPENSign up TODAY! We have redeveloped the Provincial Judo Championships and are we are hoping to add some excitement, drama and fun to the weekend! We want the athletes and clubs to take pride in being Provincial Champions. We want to be be challenging and a goal for every athlete and club to become provincial champions.

Remember that there is team competition and an overall club championships. Each athlete that competes at the 2024 Provincial Championships is important to the your club to gain points for the club championships.

2024 Girls Sleepover Camp

Judo Alberta and Raymond Judo Club are pleased to invite girls of all ages to join us for the 2024 edition of Girls Sleepover Camp, hosted by the very first judo club in Alberta, historic Raymond Judo Club! We are pleased to welcome Erin Morgan, who competed at Katsuta Kup as a little girl and went on to represent Canada at many international events.

Who: Girls of Judo Alberta and open to any girl who is a member of Judo Canada. Age 5+
Where: Raymond High School – 65W E 100 N #65W, Raymond, AB T0K 2S0
When: March 23 12:00p.m. – March 24 12:00p.m.
Cost: $60 per athlete. Coaches & Chaperones – no cost.
What to pack: judogi, pajamas, exercise clothes, toiletries, medications, pillow, sleeping bag, foam mattress. Unfortunately outlets will not be available for air mattresses.

February 16 EmpowerHER Session

The next EmpowerHER Judo Session will take place on February 16 (9647 62nd Avenue, Edmonton) from 6:30-8:00 pm at Tokugawa Judo Club. This session is open to all ages and skill levels. We will play some fun Judo games, do some technical, and end the session with a speaker session. Our speaker for this event will be Ana Laura Portuondo Isasi. 

Before 2023, the last time Ana Laura Portuondo Isasi participated in an international competition was the 2017 Senior World Championships. She won World Junior Bronze in 2014 and placed fifth in 2013. Ana Laura won her first senior World Cup in 2015 in Buenos Aires and has been Canadian National Champion in all age categories. Unfortunately, she was hampered by multiple concussions and decided to put her judo career on hold. However, she decided to come back to competitive Judo in 2023. She has had a triumphant return, winning the Montréal Pan-American Open and competing at the 2024 Portugal Grand Prix.
