Introduction to the 2019 Canada Winter Games
The Canada Winter Games (CWG) is the second biggest multi-sport event that happens in Canada every four years. The CWG has a similar format as an Olympic games but instead of gathering the best athletes from around the world, the CWG gathers the best athletes in Canada.
Alberta will be proud to host the 2019 Canada Winter Games in Red Deer, Alberta from February 15, 2019 to March 03, 2019. The 2019 Canada Winter Games will be the largest event ever hosted in Red Deer and the largest multi-sport and cultural event to be hosted in Alberta in over 30 years – since the 1988 Olympics in Calgary. Over 3,600 participants from across Canada will compete for gold in 19 sports during the 2019 games.
Judo Alberta is looking for athletes who are committed, hardworking and who want to strive to be the best they can be at these games. Judo Alberta is developing a plan that will allow our athletes to be the best in the country, but it will not be easy and we need everyone’s help. It is very important that every athlete and all clubs get involved in the preparation process and the selection process.

Belt Rank: All competitors must be green belt or higher
Selection Criteria:
Please review the information and if there are questions, please ask them early and often. We want to make sure that every athlete/coach/parent understands the process.
Developmental Plan:
Judo Alberta will receive funding from Alberta Sport Connection to prepare the team for the 2019 Canada Winter Games. The program will start in September 2016 and it will be open to all athletes that are in this age division who meet the eligibility criteria at the final selection competition (age, weight, belt rank).*
The developmental plan will be a mixture of funded events and non-funded events. Athletes do not have to participate in every event listed. It is important that athletes develop at their own rate and participate in events that are beneficial to their development.
Judo Alberta will start to nominate athletes to participate in specific selection events based on their results at the national and international level. The program will not exclude additional or committed, eligible athletes to participate in events as self-funded athletes.
In year two Judo Alberta will be off setting the cost of the bus travel to the 2016 Inter-Provincial Camp in Vernon. Judo Alberta will indicate if there will be Canada Winter Games funding for events when they are advertised.
Judo Alberta strongly suggests that all athletes interested in the 2019 Canada Winter Games start attending provincial training camps, regional training camps, provincial competitions, inter-provincial competitions and National Championships. The Judo Alberta selection criteria/developmental plan for Open Nationals is a good guideline for the experience athletes will need to excel at this event. It is of the utmost importance that athletes have sufficient levels of experience to compete effectively at the 2019 Canada Winter Games.
